How to easily overcome the "Access Denied" Error / Warning Message in Windows Vista

Most of the times when we try to open a few windows folder like Document and Settings in Windows Vista you may get an error message as “Access Denied”. This is a common error message in Windows Vista and there is a very simple method to overcome this error.

The reason the error message pops-up is due to the fact that you don't have enough permissions to view the contents of the folder. Well, you will need to change ownership of this folder to gain access.

Here's how you do it:
  • Right Click on the Folder and Open "Properties".
  • In the Security option select the Advanced tab and click the Edit button.
  • Now you can easily change ownership to your account by highlighting your account and also selecting replace ownership to sub containers and apply changes.
Done. You'll have access to the folder. But the only catch here is that your account must have "Administrative" privileges to do the above operations.

How to easily Install any Firefox 2.0 extension on Firefox 3.0?

Firefox 3.0 was launched recently - Incase any of you have missed on getting the faster and meaner Firefox, head straight to the Official website and download the 7.3 MB download.

Well, I recently did this and was surprised to see most of my Firefox extensions of 2.0 not working in the new Firefox 3.0. The only exception was DownloadThemAll (or DTa as it is popularly called). As usual, I have a trick on my sleave to get across with this problem. Though this method is not fool proof - but in my case it worked without a blip.

Here are the steps you need to follow:
1. Download the .xpi file of the extension (You can use Internet Explorer for this)
2. Rename the downloaded file .zip from the .xpi
3. Now open the new zip file using WinZip / WinRar or any other file compression software.
4. Inside the zip - Open the install.rdf in edit mode
5. Locate and Replace 2.0.0.* by 3.* in Mozilla Firefox section.
6. Save the .rdf file and rename zip archive back to .xpi
7. Now Install the extension.(Double click the .xpi file and open in Firefox)

It works as expected. All the very Best!!

Now SysInternals tools available at an Internet Website near you

Well, if you're a fan of the Sysinternals tools like me - then you have great news. You can check out the beta of Sysinternals Live - a cool service that makes it easy for you to execute Sysinternals tools directly from the Web without hunting for and manually downloading them. That's simply wonderful as I use ProcessMonitor, FileMonitor , etc to maximum use and go hunting for it if I'm at a colleague's desk.

You can now simply enter a tool's Sysinternals Live path into Windows Explorer, or at the command prompt as \\live.sysinternals.com\tools\, or view the entire Sysinternals Live tools directory in a browser.

Now's that's what I call some wishful thinking for the Developer community.

How about running 27 Copies of Windows Vista Enterprise SP 1 on a single Windows Server 2008

Well, Microsoft to my knowledge has never - ever contested the fact that Windows Vista's hardware requirements made the latest Windows OS as resource hungry, but at the same time, on the contrary Microsoft did point out that, given the right system, the platform would deliver quite a performance.

And what is mean't by performance in the Microsoft World- Well Keith Combs a Microsoft IT Pro Evangelist has a good explanation and quite a lot of fun experimenting on the same. Combs managed to get 28 Windows operating systems running simultaneously on the same machine. The 28 Windows operating systems consisted of a whooping 27 copies of Windows Vista Enterprise Service Pack 1 on a single Windows Server 2008.

"Twenty Seven Windows Vista Enterprise SP1 Virtual Machines executing courtesy of Windows Server 2008 and Hyper-V. All of this is running on a single laptop, Lenovo ThinkPad T61p with 8GB of Kingston memory," Combs explained.

That's really superb - Hope the guys over the fence are hearing too.

Adobe Finally enters the Online Application Market

Though a bit late - but Adobe seems to be in a state of "Better Late than Never" and has rolled out an online website at Acrobat. This website basically allows you to convert pdf and even store them online.

The other features are as listed below:
  • Buzzword: Well, it's Adobe's version of the online word processor same like Google Docs or Zoho.
  • ConnectNow: It's a very cool web conferencing tool that lets you share your desktop with others, chat, talk over a VoIP connection, or share files and mark up whiteboards.
  • Share: You can share files with other users using this feature. Adobe Share lets you send files to a list of contacts, and lets the recipients view PDF image, and video files online.
  • Create PDF: Seriously, do I need to tell you what this does?
  • My Files: Lets you Store and organize up to 5GB of files online.
On another front Adobe has also released Acrobat 9, an updated version of its desktop PDF reader with support for embedded Flash, which means you might start finding PDF documents with embedded YouTube videos or other Flash content.
